User Guide: Interactive Hangdrum Map

Welcome to Legatto Institute Handpan Viewer, The ultimate digital tool for artists, makers, and enthusiasts of melodic percussion. This software allows you to design, explore, and customize the sonic architecture of a handpan in a three-dimensional, auditory environment.

1. Fundamental Interaction: Explore Your Instrument

The application is designed to be intuitive on both mobile and desktop devices.

  • Selection of Notes: Click or tap any note (including the Ding central) to select it. Doing so will open a contextual editing panel.

  • Drag and Drop (Custom Drag): Once you have selected a note, you can freely drag it across the surface of the instrument to try different ergonomic configurations.

  • Casing Views: Use the top selectors to toggle between the Top View (Top), the Bottom View (Bottom/Mutant) or the Dual View, which allows you to see both sides of the instrument simultaneously.

2. Tuning and Scale Settings

The Handpan Map is a powerful tool for applied music theory.

  • Root Note (Ding): Define the root note and octave of your instrument. This will automatically recalculate the entire selected scale.

  • Scale Explorer: Choose from over 20 predefined scales (Kurd, Amara, Celtic, Integral, etc.). If you make manual changes to individual notes, the system will automatically mark the scale as Customized.

  • Master Frequency (440Hz vs 432Hz): Changes the instrument's base frequency. Ideal for musicians exploring therapeutic tuning or harmonic coherence at 432Hz.

3. Design Architecture (Layout)

Are you designing a 9-note instrument or a "monster" with notes on both sides?

  • Upper Ring: Increase or decrease the number of notes on the main face. The system will automatically distribute them geometrically.

  • Lower Notes (Mutants): Activate the lower casing to add tonal extensions. These notes are essential for advanced compositions and extended-range instrument designs.

  • Reset Layout: If you have moved the notes manually and wish to return to the original geometric perfection, use the button Reset Design.

4. Aesthetics and Visualization (The Vibe)

The tool is not only functional, but also a visual experience.

  • Display Modes: Change the text within the notes between:

    • Name: It displays the note and its octave (e.g., D3, A4).

    • Interval: Show the theoretical relationship with the Ding (1, b3, 5, etc.).

    • Number: Displays the index of the grade on the scale.

  • Styles (Vibes): Customize the outline color or activate mode Holographic Aura (Rainbow) for a dynamic visual experience that reacts to your interaction.

5. Project Management: Sets Library

Don't lose your creations. The application includes a local database.

  • Save Set: Give your current configuration a name (scale, positions, colors, and notes) and save it.

  • Upload and Share: Access your saved designs anytime from the bookmark icon in the header. Your data is saved in the browser, so it will be there the next time you return. legatto.space.
